| ObjectThe purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of CSF diversion with endoscopic thirdventriculostomy(ETV)versus shunt therapy in young children with obstructive hydrocephalus.MethodsThe authors conducted a retrospective analysis of 113 children 2 year of age or younger with obstructive hydrocephalus in whom CSF diversion was performed using either ETV or shunt placement at the first affliated hospitals of zhengzhou university between 2011 and 2016.The authors compared failure rates of ETV and shunt,as well as clinical characteristics、postoperation complication by using Statistic method.ResultsClinical characteristics of chirldren was not different. The result of the CSFdiversion was not different between VPS and ETV.The rate of postoperation complication in ETV group is less than in VPS,such as fever 、 infection.Higher operative failure rates were observed in infants at under 1 year who underwent ETV as opposed to the group between 1 and 2 year.ConclusionsCompared with the shunt placement,ETV was not better in children with obstructive hydrocephalus.Age is likely to be a prognostic factor for ETV failure. However, less postoperation complicationn was presented in ETV group, and children need not have to live with shunt device all lifetime.Further investigation to distinguish which treatment is more effective in the long term was needed. |
