| Objective: Diffusion kurtosis imaging(DKI)can provide more sensitive results of microstructural abnormalities compared with traditional diffusion tensor imaging(DTI).In this study,we want to investigate the differences with fractional anisotropy(FA),mean diffusion(MD)and mean kurtosis(MK)values between bipolar disorder(BD)patients and healthy control(HC)subjects. Methods: FA,MD and MK values were attained with a General Electric Company(GE)3.0 T scanner from 47 patients with BD and 49 healthy controls which are age-,handedness-,and sex-matched with patients.Tract based spatial statistics(TBSS)was used to compare the FA,MD and MK between two groups in WM with covariant of age,sex and education years and same statistics analysis of voxel-based-analysis(VBA)in GM.Result: There was no significant difference between two groups with TBSS and VBA by DTI scanning. After DKI scanning about two groups with TBSS,there were some significant differences in corpus callosum(CC)of BD patients which FA value was significantly reduce(FWE,P<0.05)compared HC group.MD value in corpus callosum(CC),fornix, bilateral radiation crown(RC-B),bilateral external capsule(EC),and the right side of the internal capsule(IC-R)of BD patients was significantly increased(FWE,P<0.05)compared HC group.MK value in CC and right side of the radiation crown(RC-R)of BD patients was significantly reduce(FWE,P<0.05)compared HC group. The result of VBA show that MD value was significantly reduce(FWE,P<0.05,voxel size>10)in the right side of Temporal, bilateral Insula, left side of anterior Cingulum and left side of superior Frontal of BD patients. There was no significant correlation between different regions and clinical symptomatic scale. Conclusion: This is the first study to investigate the whole brain microstructure changes by Diffusion kurtosis imaging(DKI).The result shown that DKI was more sensitively signified the difference between two groups than traditional way like Diffusion tensor imaging(DTI).It is possible that DKI replant DTI to investigate the microstructure changes with bipolar disorder(BD)patients. |
