Objective: To explore clinical characteristics among the paients of ischemic stroke with patent foramen ovale(PFO)and the efficiency of prevention after transcatheter device closure on stroke recurrence. Methods: Forty-six patients, who were diagnosed with ischemic stroke accompanied with patent foramen ovale in the Department of Neurology of the Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University from September 2014 to December 2017,were selected as the study subjects retrospectively. They were divided into two groups, the group younger than age 40(n=22)and the group older than age 40(n=24).Transcatheter device closure could be carried out in twenty-seven patients of all,and ten patients were carried out the operation. All patients underwent cranial Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI),contrast-enhanced transthoracic echocardiography(cTTE)and contrast-enhanced transesophageal echocardio-graphy(cTEE).We reviewed related clinical information. We followed up the all patients after 3 months, and investigated whether there is a recurrence of stroke. Results: The numbers of infarction lesion, anterior and/or posterior cerebral circulation system, shunt volume of PFO,in the group younger than age 40 and the group older than age 40,were not significantly different(P>0.05);There was significant difference between the group younger than age 40 and the group older than age 40 in hypertension and hyperhomocysteinemia(P<0.05),while there was no significant difference in diabetes mellitus, coronary atherosclerotic cardiopathy, hyperlipidemia, smoking, drinking, and other histories. After 3-month follow-up,The recurrence of stroke in the operation and non-operation groups was no significantly different(P>0.05).Conclusions: We should actively distinguish PFO in patients diagnosedwith cryptogenic ischemic stroke, especially in the younger than age 40 with hyperhomocysteinemia and the older than age 40 with hypertension. In order to prevent the stroke recurrence,we should comprehensively evaluate all reasons to determine the final treatment.
