Background Food safety has become an important public health problem. It has always been highly concerned by all sectors of society. The cognitive and behavior on food safety of educational and medical college students was not only related to their own health, but also related to more social groups.Previous studies have shown that although college students were concerned about food safety and have the desire to get information about food safety, their knowledge and behavior about food safety still have deficiencies. In recent years,We-media has become the main sources of information for college students since its characteristics of rapid dissemination, strong interaction and free voice. At home and abroad,We-media has been applied in the field of health education and health promotion, but its application in food safety intervention was very limited. Objective The objectives of the study was to explore the needs for food safety information through We-media,to get the knowledge, attitude and practice(KAP)of food safety among educational and medical college students, and to explore the effectiveness and feasibility of We-media in food safety intervention. Methods Needs survey: using stratified cluster sampling method, two universities in Chongqing University Town were selected. Two collegeswere selected from each university. All freshman and sophomore of each college were as the research object.A total of 2684 college students participated in the questionnaire survey, and 18 of them participated in the personal in-depth interview survey.Intervention study: a total of 1271 freshmen who participated in the needs survey were all the baseline subjects and they were randomly divided into intervention group and control group taking the college as a unit. The intervention group released food safety intervention information for two months through We-Chat public number. The control group did not do any treatment. The food safety KAP questionnaire was conducted immediately after intervention,3 months and 6 months after intervention and there were1051,936 and 839 participated in the 3times impact assessment surveies. Results Needs survey: 97.7% of the participants used We-media in the last week more than 1 time and 96.6% of the participants used We-media in the last week more than 1 hour.On the working day,33.2% of the participants used We-media 2-4 hours per day,and on the rest day,47.2% of the participants used We-media >4 hours per day.The most commonly used We-media were QQ(more than 90% participants)and We-Chat(more than 70% participants).53.7% of the participants have been paying attention to food safety information by We-media for the last month.67.9% of the participants were willing to accept food safety intervention by We-media.48.2% of the participants were willing to accept food safety information through the We-Chat public number.Intervention study: In the baseline survey, there was a statistical difference between intervention group and control group of the educational students on the sex and the average monthly living expense(p<0.05).Therewas no statistical difference between intervention group and control group of the medical students on the demographic information(p>0.05).There was a statistical difference between intervention group and control group of the educational students on grading of food safety practice(p<0.05).There was no statistical difference between intervention group and control group of the medical students on grading of food safety KAP(p>0.05).In the knowledge of food safety, the correct rate of "frozen food should be defrosting in the refrigerator ice chamber" is 43.1%.The correct rate of "shelf life is the time limit for keeping the quality of pre packaged food" is29.2%.The correct rate of "Spices and flavors can be used in milk" is21.2%.The correct rate of "Food borne diseases are usually contagious or toxic" was 48.6%.More than 70% of participants were worried about common food safety problems.More than 80% of the participants were willing to improve their knowledge of food safety and change their bad eating habits. In terms of food safety behavior,47.7% of participants always keep food labels on food labels.Only 36% of the participants always ask or deal with complaints from the relevant departments when they buy trouble food.Immediately after intervention, the proportion of high score group of food safety KAP in the intervention group of educational students was higher than that of the control group, but there was no statistical difference between two groups(p>0.05).The proportion of high score group of food safety KAP in the control group was higher than that in the intervention group, but there was no statistical difference between two groups(p>0.05).3 months after intervention, the proportion of high score group of food safety knowledge and attitude in the intervention group was higher than that of the control group. The proportion of high score group of food safetypractice was lower than that of the control group. There was a statistical difference between two groups in the food safety KAP(p<0.05).6 months after intervention, the proportion of high score group of food safety KAP in the intervention group was higher than that in the control group, but there was only a statistical difference between two groups on food safety knowledge(p<0.05).Conclusions This study shows that although educational and medical college students were concerned about the food safety problems, and have the desire to improve their knowledge of food safety and change the safe behavior of bad food, their knowledge and practices of food safety were still insufficient. There were differences in some food safety cognition and behavior between educational students and medical students. It was necessary to explore more targeted and effective food safety interventions for different specialties. The effect of We-media on food safety cognition and behavior intervention for educational and medical students was not significant. How to better play the role of We-media in food safety intervention needs to be further studied.
