PART I:META-ANALYSIS OF THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN ASTHMA AND SERUM LEVELS OF HIGH-DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN CHOLESTEROL AND LOW-DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN CHOLESTEROLBackground: The reported associations of blood lipid profiles with asthma are ambiguous. Objective: To explore the association between asthma and the serum levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL)and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL).Methods: A systematic search was performed in the PubMed,MEDLINE,Cochrane Library, and Chinese Biomedical Literature databases.Ten studies were identified. We divided these studies into 2subgroups according to age: children(<18 years old)and adults(≧ 18 years old). Results: In children, the asthma group had lower HDL levels(weighted mean difference,-3.44mg/dl;95% confidence interval [CI],-5.83 to-1.04;P 0.005)compared with the nonasthma group, whereas the6 serum levels of LDL in these 2 groups were not statistically different. In contrary,in adults, the asthma group had higher LDL levels(weighted mean difference,8.95mg/dl;95% CI,3.55 to 14.35;P=0.001)compared with the nonasthma group, whereas the HDL levels were not statistically different. Conclusion: There is a significant association between asthma and the serum levels of HDL and LDL.Moreover, this association differs in children and adults.PART II: A CLINICAL SURVEY ABOUT THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN BLOOD LIPID PROFILES AND CHILDHOOD ASTHMAObjectives: To explore the association between blood lipid levels and the prevalence, clinical stage, allergy condition and lung function of asthma. Methods: 56 children with asthma were selected as asthma group and46 non-asthmatic children as control group.According to the clinical manifestations, asthmatic children were divided into acute exacerbation group(n = 24)and chronic persistent group(n = 32).And according to skin prick test(SPT)and serum IgE levels, the children with asthma were divided into non-allergic asthma group(n=16)and allergic asthma group(n=38).Fasting blood lipid levels were measured in both asthma andcontrol groups and lung function tests were performed on asthma group. Results: First, there is no significant differences in blood lipid levels between asthma children and non-asthma children.Second, children with asthma exacerbation has lower levels of HDL and TC(P<0.05)when compared to non-asthma children and children with persistent asthma.Third, lower HDL level is significantly related to allergic asthma(P<0.05),compared with non-allergic asthma. In asthmatic children aged 6-13 years, the percentages of predicted values of forced vital capacity, peak expiratory flow and maximal expiratory flow at 50% of vital capacity have a linear regression relationship with HDL and are positively correlated with HDL(P<0.05)while forced expiratory volume in one-second,maximum mid-expiratory flow have a linear regression relationship with both levels of HDL and LDL and are positively correlated with both levels of HDL and LDL(P<0.05).Conclusion: there seems an association between blood lipid levels and the clinical stage, allergy condition and lung function of childhood asthma, which may indicate that blood lipid profiles may be involved in most parts of the development of asthma.
