Nanomaterials are new synthetic materials between 1 and 100 nanometers in size.Carbon dots are typical nanomaterials.Recent studies have shown that carbon has a series of excellent properties,such as good luminescence,low toxicity and biocompatibility.As the representative of traditional Chinese medicine,Chinese medicine is rich in kinds and functions,and has good curative effect for some diseases.However,in general,traditional Chinese medicine has a large particle size and is not easy to disperse and dissolve.Gynostemma pentaphyllum and Astragalus membranaceus were two representative anti-aging and anti-oxidation herbs.After they were made into traditional Chinese medicine carbon dots,their physical and chemical properties were greatly improved.However,their function in biology remains to be studied.In this study,three kinds of traditional Chinese medicine carbon dots,namely,Gynostemma pentaphyllum(hydrothermal method),Gynostemma pentaphyllum(calcining method)and Astragalus membranaceus,were used as experimental materials.Zebrafish and He La cells were used as experimental objects to explore the toxic and antioxidant effects of carbon dots on zebrafish and cells during growth and development from different levels.From the results of morphological experiments,the three carbon dots of Gynostemma pentaphyllum(hydrothermal method),gynostemma pentaphyllum(calcination method)and Astragalus membranaceus had no toxicological effects on the physiological indicators of zebrafish at each stages of growth and development.From the results of cytological experiments,All three had no toxicological effects on cells.Finally,biochemical and molecular experiments showed that Chinese carbon dots could promote the related antioxidant genes gclc,gstp1,nqo1,sod1 and sod2 in zebrafish to varying degrees,and the content of ROS and MDA in zebrafish and cells could be effectively reduced.It was demonstrated that Gynostemma pentaphyllum(hydrothermal method),Gynostemma pentaphyllum(calcination method)and Astragalus membranaceus had some antioxidative effects.In summary,The research of this topic has provided a new method for reducing the size of Chinese medicine particles and improving the clinical absorption rate of Chinese medicine.It also provides new ideas for Chinese medicine to be able to treat some related diseases more effectively.
