ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of female pelvic organ prolapse surgery on the sexual function of male partners.MethodsA comparative study of sexual function changes in male partners before and after female pelvic organ prolapse surgery, including randomized controlled trials, cohort studies and case-control studies, was performed based on information retrieval of PubMed,Cochrane Library,Medline,Embase,Science Citation Index,Social Science Citation Index,Chinese Journal Full-text Database,Chinese Biomedical Literature Database,VIP Medical Database and Wanfang Medical Database.Female pelvic organ prolapse surgery methods include anterior vaginal wall and /or posterior wall repair, vaginal hysterectomy,Manchester operation, vaginal closure, modified pelvic floor reconstruction.Literatures of female pelvic organ prolapse accompanying with urinary incontinence were excluded.Meta-analysis of retrieved data was performed by using RevMan5.3 software.ResultsA total of 318 related articles were retrieved.Three of them were systematically evaluated on the changes of male partner sexual function before and after female pelvic organ prolapse surgery.A total of 134 couples was included in the study. The results showed that the sex drive of male partners was significantly higher than that before surgery[MD =-1.28,95% CI(-1.71,-0.86),P < 0.00001],overall sexual satisfaction was improved [MD =-1.38,95% CI(-1.73,-1.03),P <0.00001].There was no significant change in erectile function [MD =-0.08,95% CI(-0.59,0.44),P= 0.77],with no significant changes in ejaculation function [MD =-0.09,95% CI(-0.47,0.28),P = 0.62].ConclusionsSurgical treatment of pelvic organ prolapse may improve sex drive and overall sexual satisfaction of male partners, however, have no significant effect on erectile function and ejaculation. In addition, this study also has the following defects: there were limited related original studies involved, and there was some heterogeneity in the measurement and evaluation of male sexual function.
