Objective To investigate the characteristics of the pupil diameter and the pupillary light reflex in the normal subjects, thus to provide the reference for the clinical practice and scientific research. Methods The pupil size and the pupillary light reflexes were quantitatively detected in 103 normal subjects(206 eyes)with digital pupilometer after dark adaption. The pupillary initial diameter, minimum diameter, constriction latency and constriction velocity were automatically analyzed by computer, and the difference between both eyes, gender and age was also analyzed. The average age for normal subjects was 43 years old(8~67 years old). Results With the increasing age,the parameters, such as the pupil diameter, the pupillary constriction amplitude, the pupillary constriction velocity were significantly decreased, and the pupillary constriction latency was obviously prolonged. There was no significant difference for the parameters, like eyes, genders, direct and indirect light reflex. Conclusion Digital pupillometer could provide quantitative data for pupil size and the pupillary light reflex, which could provide the reference for the clinical diagnosis and follow-up of various pupillary abnormalities.
