【Background】In recent years,a large number of studies have confirmed that internal carotid artery stenosis can lead to cognitive impairment. However, few studies have examined the details of cognitive impairment caused by internal carotid artery stenosis. At the same time, there is limited comprehensive and independent tool to assess the cognitive function of patients with internal carotid artery stenosis.【Objective】To analyze the features of cognitive impairment in patients with internal carotid artery stenosis using the Cantonese version of the Birmingham Cognitive Screen(BCo S).【Method】19 patients with internal carotid artery stenosis were recruited in our study. To assess the cerebral perfusion, nine of them underwent CT perfusion imaging examination.Their cognitive data were collected using the Cantonese version of the Birmingham Cognitive Screen(BCo S),the Montreal Cognitive Assessment(Mo CA)and the Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE).【Results】According to the Cantonese version of the Birmingham Cognitive Screen(BCo S),18 patients were diagnosed as cognitive impairment in at least 1 or more cognitive domains. The most common of impaired cognitive sub-domains were executive function, episodic memory, language, spatial neglect.Besides, attention and digital capabilities impairment were detected in these patients as well.Compared symptomatic with asymptomatic carotid stenosis patients, the former were more likely to suffer cognitive impairment in both the calculation and the complex figure copy(p<0.05).Patients with severe internal carotid artery stenosis achieved lower scores in the delayed recall(p<0.05),compared with those moderate internal carotid artery stenosis.11 and 8 patients were defined as cognitive impairment by Mo CA and MMSE,saperately.BCo S were more sensitive than Mo CA and MMSE in our study.4 patients without brain perfusion dysfunction showed at least 1 or more cognitive domains impairment in our study.【Conclusions】The Cantonese BCo S is a more sensitive tool for the detection of cognitive problems in patients with internal carotid artery stenosis. There is a high incidence of cognitive impairment in patients with internal carotid artery stenosis, the most common affected domain were executive function, episodic memory and language.Besides, spatial neglect was found,as well.
