| Vestibular paroxysmia is a kind of external vestibular disorder which can cause vertigo. The main symptoms of vestibular paroxysmia(VP)are recurrent, spontaneous, short attacks of spinning or non-spinning vertigo that generally last less than one minute and occur in a series of up to 30 or more per day.The incidence of vestibular paroxysmia is so low that has been missed diagnosis easily. As in trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, lossopharyngeal neuralgia or myokymia of the superior oblique muscle,it is doubted that a neurovascular cross compression of the eighth cranial nerve is the pathophysiological mechanism of VP.On the basis of brainstem auditory evoked potential examination and MRI imaging findings can help in the diagnosis of the disease. The phenomenon of neurovascular corss compression is seen in most patients with vestibular paroxysmia.Drugs are commonly used to treat the disease, such as carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine.Microvascular decompression is commonly used in surgical treatment, but there is still controversial. |
