Aim: In order to evaluate the association between thickened IMT and immunoglobulin G(IgG),immunoglobulin M(IgM),immunoglobulin E(IgE),immunoglobulin A(IgA),we designed a cross-sectional study in an adult population. So as to provide prevention, predictive factors and prognostic factors for high-risk groups of carotid artery atherosclerosis. Methods: The study was executed in Tianjin,China all of whom were recruited from Tianjin Chronic Low-Grade Systemic Inflammation and Health Cohort Study(TCLSIHealth). The subjects had received at least one health examination including carotid artery intima-media thickness(CIMT)and serum-immunological tests between 2010 and 2016.Into a total of 6,555 research object, which meet the exclusion and inclusion criteria and is willing to sign a consent form voluntary to join the cross-sectional study of 4,880 people.Variables involved in the study are: lifestyle questionnaire variables(family history, disease history, social demographic data, the condition of drug use, drinking and smoking status, physical activity and diet and living habits, etc.),physical examination variable(height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, etc.)and laboratory examination variables(FBS,HDL-C,LDL-C,TC,TG),immunoglobulin(IgE,IgG,IgM and IgA)and carotid intima-media thickness(CIMT).The serum levels of immunoglobulins were measured by an immunonephelometric technique using the automated IMMAGE 800 immuno-chemistry system(Beckman Coulter,Brea,CA,USA),and expressed as mg/dL or IU/mL.Ultrasound system(iU Elite)to assess carotid intima-media thickness(CIMT)and the carotid artery atherosclerosis was defined as common carotid artery ?1.0mm or carotid bulb ?1.2mm.Adjusted logistic models were used to assess the associations between immunoglobulins and thickened IMT.Results: The prevalence of thickened IMT 29.5% for the whole population, and 35.3% and 20.6% for males and females. In analysis of comparion of basic characteristics, the differences of age, gender, body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, biochemical measurement, prevalence of several metabolic disease, smoking and drinking status, etc.were statistical significant between populations with thickened carotid IMT and non-thickened groups(P for trend <0.05).Similar results were observed in subsequent stratification analysis stratified by gender. After adjusted or confounding factors, the odds ratios(ORs)(95% confidence interval,CI)of thickened IMT for across categories of immunoglobulins(IgG,IgE,IgM,IgA)were 1.00,0.84(0.69,1.03),0.80(0.65,0.99),0.70(0.56,0.88)(P for trend <0.01);1.00,1.02(0.83,1.27),1.21(0.98,1.50),1.16(0.94,1.44),(P for trend =0.22);1.00,1.003(0.83,1.22),0.92(0.75,1.12),0.75(0.60,0.94)(P for trend <0.01);1.00,1.19(0.97,1.47),1.11(0.90,1.38),1.09(0.88,1.35)(P for trend =0.69).In males, after adjustments for confounding factors, the incidence of thickened IMT were lower in fourth than first categories of IgM,but, similar relationship were not observed in the females. In mole 3,the adjusted OR(95% confidence interval,95%CI)for thickened IMT across IgG quartiles in males were 1.00(reference),0.83(0.66,1.05),0.83(0.65,1.07),and 0.73(0.55,0.96)(P for trend < 0.05),respectively,the fourth categories of IgG in females also lower than the first category with the prevalence of thickened IMT.Conclusions: Increased IgG and IgM were related to the lower prevalence of thickened IMT,whereas IgA and IgE do not have significantly associated to this parameter in males. While,in females, only IgG have a negative correlation with the incidence of thickened IMT.In addition, further studies are needed to explore the exact mechanisms of immunoglobulins in thickened IMT.
