Purpose:Recently, ultrasound therapy, due to its non-invasive and safe characteristics, has gained increasing attention in the field of rehabilitation medicine, particularly in the sports injury treatment. This study aims to investigate the immediate pain relief effect of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound(PLIUS)or low-intensity focused ultrasound(LIFU)with the combination of additional physical therapy on the chondromalacia patellae(CP).MethodThis is a randomized study.Forty adults with CP underwent both PLIUS(0.3w/cm~2,1MHz)and LIFU(Intensity:0.7-1.0w/cm~2,0.8MHz)in a randomized order on different days. Each participant took a 20-minute ultrasound therapy before and after 5-minute cycling exercise.Three times of measurement including pain-free range of motion(ROM)and painful arch of the knee, duration of completing up-and-down stairs and the post visual analog scale of pain(VAS)was performed at the baseline, after two cycling exercises.ResultsTotally 40 participants completed all the experimental procedures.compared with the results after cycling, the painful arch decreased 3.23°and 5.13°,the duration of completing up-and-down stairs decreased 1.50s and 2.64s and the VAS significantly decreased 0.325and 0.950 in LIPU and LIFU group(p<0.05),respectively.ConclusionBoth low-intensity pulsed ultrasound(PLIUS)or low-intensity focused ultrasound(LIFU)have significant immediate effect on CP,while the LIFU has more prominent effect.
