Objectives: In this study,we compared the hepatic and pancreatic fat content between patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)and normal subjects and aimed to explore the relationship between hepatic and pancreatic fat content and islet function in patients with T2 DM.Also, the correlation between liver fat content(LFC)and pancreatic fat content(PFC)in patients with T2 DM was discussed. Methods: 78 patients with T2 DM and 34 normal subjects were recruited in this study. All participants underwent three-echo Dixon with 3.0-T MR imager.Dixon imaging parameters(LFC and PFC)were collected.Statistical analysis was used to analyze the influencing factors of LFC and PFC,the correlation of LFC and PFC,and the correlation between hepatic and pancreatic fat content and indicators related to islet function. Results: There were statistical differences in the data of LFC and PFC between T2 DM patients and normal subjects(LFC 5.06%(2.76%—7.20%)vs2.38%(1.95%—4.38%);PFC 7.02%±1.66% vs 5.99%±2.15%;all P<0.01).In the group of T2 DM patients, there is a positive correlation between LFC and PFC(r=0.389,P<0.001);Correlations were both found in LFC and PFC with HOMA-IR(all P<0.05).The effect of LFC and PFC on insulin resistance was analyzed by a stepwise multivariate regression analysis, the results showed that only LFC was significantly related to HOMA-IR(St?=0.451,P<0.001).Conclusion: Subjects with T2 DM have higher LFC and PFC than subjects without T2 DM.Both LFC and PFC are associated with insulin resistance in subjects with T2 DM,and LFC may be a stronger determinant of insulin resistance than PFC.In the prevention and treatment of diabetes, prevention of fatty liver and fatty pancreas,as well as the prevention of visceral fat deposition and related IR,is of great significance.
