Objective: Effect of nonselective beta-receptor blockers on thyrotoxic periodic paralysis.Methods:Patients with hypokalemia admitted to the Emergency Department of the Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University from June 2014 to June 2018 were collected.Among them,39 patients with eligible hyperthyroidism with hypokalemia and limb weakness were divided into two groups according to different treatment methods.One group included 19 cases of only use peripheral venous potassium chloride;One group included 20 cases of peripheral venous potassium chloride combined with oral propranolol.Serum potassium level and initial muscle strength were recorded during emergency visit.The change of muscle strength and the time for blood potassium to return to normal level after potassium supplementation;The time difference between the two groups from the start of potassium supplementation to the recovery of serum potassium to the normal level(serum potassium > 3.5mmol/L)was analyzed.So as to evaluate the effect of propranolol on potassium supplementation in patients with hyperthyroidism and periodic paralysis.Results:1.There was no significant difference in age,gender and initial serum potassium level between the two groups.(P>0.05).2.The recovery time of serum potassium to normal level in the combination of peripheral venous potassium supplementation and oral propranolol was shorter than that of the simple peripheral venous potassium supplementation.(P<0.05).Conclusion:Potassium supplementation in combination with periodic paralysis caused by hyperthyroidism and oral administration of propranolol can shorten the time for blood potassium to return to normal level.
