PURPOSE: To evaluate the accuracy and reproducibility of intra oral scanning system by comparing linear measurements obtained from images of conventional models and digital models.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five volunteers are made according to the inclusion criteria. After taken silicon impressions, volunteers' oral cavities are scanned directly by TRIOS Ortho(3 Shape). The gypsum models made from silicon impressions are measured by digital caliper and regarded as golden standard, which is compared with images of extra oral scanning to validate the reliability and accuracy of Simplant software. Then a well-trained examiner measures both extra oral scanning images and intra oral scanning images in random order. The measurements are repeated for fifteen times.Datasets obtained from different groups were compared for accuracy via paired t test.A one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA)was implemented to compare differences within intra oral scanning groups for reproducibility.Statistical analyses were calculated by using SAS 11.0 software.A level of statistical significance of p <0.05 was set.RESULTS: On both accuracy and reproducibility, most of the chosen parameters show no significant difference(p>0.05),except for the accuracy on 23 L from V1(p<0.05).CONCLUSION: The accuracy and reproducibility of intra oral scanning on whole arches are quite acceptable in vivo study.
