Background and Aims:IBD is a chronic nonspecific inflammatory disease mainly involving the digestive tract.Vitamin deficiency is common in patients with IBD.The aims of this investigation were to assess the serum status of VitB12 and FA in patients with IBD and to find risk factors associated with VitB12 and FA deficiencies. Methods:The medical records of 257 patients with IBD,including 195 patients with CD and 62 patients with UC,were evaluated and 118 healthy subjects were selected as control group.VitB1 deficiency was defined as serum levels below 200 pg/mL and FA deficiency was defined as serum levels below 3 ng/mL.Results:The mean serum VitB12 and FA concentration in patients with CD were 359.53±170.08 pg/mL and 7.11±4.75 ng/mL,respectively,and were all lower than in patients with UC and control group. The prevalence of CD patients with VitB12 deficiency was greater compared to UC patients(14.9%vs.3.2%,P=0.014)and control group(14.9%vs.4.2%,P=0.003).The prevalence of FA deficiency in CD patients was higher compared to control group(13.3%vs.3.4%,P=0.004),and there was no significant differences between the groups of CD and UC(13.3%vs 9.7%,P=0.448).There were no significant differences in the serum VitB12 and FA statuses between the UC and control groups(P>0.05).Patients with prior ileal or ileocolic resection showed a higher prevalence of VitB12 deficiency than those without prior resection(n=6/16,n=23/179;P=0.018).A disease duration within 5 years was a risk factor of FA deficiency in CD patients(n=23/127,n=3/68;P=0.007).Conclusions:This study showed that VitB12 and FA deficiencies were more common in patients with CD than in patients with UC and control group. There were no significant differences in the serum VitB12 and FA statuses between the UC and control groups.Prior ileal or ileocolonic resection was a risk factor of VitB12 deficiency, and a disease duration within 5 years was a risk factor of FA deficiency in CD patients.
