A Study On Psychological Condition In Patients With Halitosis

Objective: To assess the differences on psychological condition and oral health-related quality of life between patients with and without halitosis,and to explore the psychological problem of halitosis patients.Meanwhile,relationship between their psychological condition and oral health-related quality of life was also investigated.Methods: Patients who complained of bad breath and were diagnosed as halitosis in the Ninth's People's Hospital were included into case group,while patients who diagnosed without halitosis were included into control group.Questionnaires and measurement of the halitosis were used to collect the data.In questionnaires,information on participants' general status,Beck Anxiety Inventory(BAI),Beck Depression Inventory(BDI),Social Avoidance and Distress Scale(SAD)and Oral Health Impact Profile-14(OHIP-14)are collected.To measure the oral malodor,Oral Chroma and organoleptic test were used.SPSS22 was used for data analysis.Results: A total of 182 participants(91 for case group and 91 for control group)were included in this study.The halitosis group had significantly higher BAI,BDI and SAD scores than the control group(13.90vs6.08,31.81vs21.75,11.76vs8.12,P<0.001).Furthermore,OHIP-14 score were significantly correlated with BAI and SAD score(r=0.480,r=0.313,P<0.001).Conclusion: Psychological condition in patients with halitosis issignificantly worse than patients without halitosis.Three aspects are mainly manifested in the anxiety,depression and social avoidance and distress.Moreover,the close relationship between psychological condition and oral health-related quality of life was confirmed.It suggested that to improve patients' quality of life,we should pay attention to the mental health of patients in the clinical treatment of halitosis patients,strengthen the education and guidance.
