Objective: stabilization splint is a common treatment for temporomandibular joint disorders, but its efficacy is controversial. Many patients have serious occlusal disorders in clinical work.If problems in occlusion are not corrected after splint treatment, discomfort in masticatory muscle may occur once more. Therefore, occlusal reconstruction following the splint treatment is also important. The purpose of this study is to observe and analyze the clinical effect of the stabilization splint and the occlusal reconstruction treatment on patients with masticatory muscle pain. Methods: Totally 20 patients with masticatory muscle pain who visited General Department and Prosthodontics Department of Affiliated Stomatology hospital of China Medical University from September 2016 to May 2018 were given the stabilization splint therapy and the occlusal reconstruction treatment. All patients underwent initial clinical examination,pre-restoration treatment, occlusal splint(3-6 months),temporary prosthesis, final prosthesis and subsequent visit. The efficiency was measured with the method of visual analogue scale(VAS),electromyographic pattern and Friction temporomandibular joint dysfunction index before treatment(T0),three months after the stabilization splint therapy(T1),occlusal reconstruction was finished(T2)and three months later(T3).SPSS 21.0 was used to analyze the data. The variance analysis of single factor repeated measurement data was used to compare the differences of evaluation indexes in different periods. The paired t test was used to compare the evaluation indexes in different periods. Results: Statistically analysis showed that VAS,the electromyographic signal of anterior temporalis and masseters in mandibular postural position(MPP),asymmetry index of masseter muscles and temporalis muscles and Friction temporomandibular joint dysfunction index decreased from T0 to T3.T1,T2 and T3 were significantly lower than that in T0(P<0.05).While The electromyographic signal of anterior temporalis and masseters were dramatically increased in intercuspal position(ICP)from T0 to T3.T1,T2 and T3 were significantly higher than those of T0(P<0.05).No significantly difference was shown in VAS,the electromyographic signal of anterior temporalis and masseters in MPP and ICP,asymmetry index of masseter muscles and temporalis muscles,Friction temporomandibular joint dysfunction index in T1,T2 and T3(P>0.05).Conclusion: The stabilization splint therapy was effective for patients with masticatory muscle pain, the occlusal reconstruction treatment was able to maintain these effects.
