| Objective: To study the relationship between the cleft lip and palate deformity and sella and ponticulus posticus by measuring the size and shape of the sella, recording the prevalence of the sella bridge and the ponticulus ponsticus. It is suggested that orthodontists pay attention to such skeletal abnormalities and provide reference for the development of correct treatment plans. Methods: We selected 100 patients with cleft lip and palate as the experimental group and another 150 patients with normal lip and palate and class I malocclusion were selected as control group. We analysed the following ST-related parameters and ponticulus posticus on the lateral cephalograms: sella size(measured the length, depth, and diameter of sella by Winceph 8.0 software),sella morphology(U shape,J shape and flat shape),sella bridging(no sella bridge, partial sella bridge, complete sella bridge).Statistical analysis was performed by SPSS 25.0.Results: There were no significant differences between the two groups on the length, depth and diameter of sella(P>0.05).The gender differences on the length, depth and diameter of sella in experimental group and control group was aslo no significant(P>0.05).The proportion on the shape of sella from most to least in both experimental group and control group were U,flat and J,there were no significant differences between the two groups(P>0.05).There were also no significant differences on genders in both experimental group and control group(P>0.05).The incidence of sella bridge in the experimental group was 51%,and that in the control group was 34.7%,the difference between two groups was statistically significant(P<0.05).No difference were found on the incidence of sella bridge between genders in two groups(P>0.05).Besides,cleft lip and palate and sella bridge were positively correlated, with significant difference(P<0.05)(pearson contingency coefficient r = 0.160).The pearson contingency coefficient r between gender and sella bridge in two groups were 0.098 and 0.079,respectively,with no significant difference(P>0.05).The prevalence of ponticulus posticus was 29% in the experimental group, but was 13.3% in the control group, the prevalence of ponticulus posticus between the two groups was staticstically significant(P<0.05).No differencewere found on the prevalence of ponticulus posticus between genders in two groups(P>0.05).Besides,Cleft lip and palate and ponticulus posticus were positively correlated, with significant difference(P<0.05)(pearson contingency coefficient r = 0.190).The pearson contingency coefficient r between gender and ponticulus posticus in two groups were 0.026 and 0.024,respectively,with no significant difference(P>0.05).Conclusion: There was no significant correlation between cleft lip and palate deformity and size and shape of the sella, but it was related to the incidence of sella bridge and ponticulus posticus. The incidence of sella bridge and ponticulus posticus was significantly increased in patients with cleft lip and palate. |
