Correlation Between Hypothyroidism Control And Bone Mineral Density

Objective: To investigate the correlation between Thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH)level and bone mineral density(BMD)in women patients with hypothyroidism after levothyroxine treatment.Methods: 168 female patients with primary hypothyroidism with age ? 65 years old were recruited in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang medical university.All of the patients were taking levothyroxine.According to TSH level,the patients were divided into well controlled group,poor controlled group,drug induced hyperthyroid group.172 euthyroid women without other endocrine diseases were selected as controls.Thyroid function,bone metabolism indexes,BMD and the occurrence of osteopenia/osteoporosis in each group were analyzed.The correlation between TSH and BMD was further analyzed.Results:(1)There were differences in TSH,FT3 and FT4 in each group(P<0.05).(2)There were differences in ALP and BGP in each group and those in the poor control group were lower than those in the control group(P<0.05).(3)The hip joint and lumbar vertebra bone density in the hypothyroidism group were lower than those in the control group(P<0.05).(4)The incidence of osteopenia and osteoporosis in the hypothyroidism group was higher than that in the control group(P<0.05).(5)The proportion of patients with normal BMD was the highest,and the incidence of osteopenia was the lowest,When TSH ranged from1.70-3.13mIU/L(P<0.05).(6)Correlation analysis showed that TSH is negatively correlated with bone metabolism indicators(serum calcium,BGP).TSH was negatively correlated with BMD(P<0.05).Logistic regression analysis indicated that TSH was statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusion: TSH maybe correlated with BMD.Abnormal thyroid function lead to abnormal bone metabolism and decrease bone density.In women with hypothyroidism,different TSH control level with levothyroxine treatment is correlated with different BMD levels.
