ObjectiveTo describe the characteristics of patients with suicidal tendency in general hospitals, and to analyze the risk factors of suicidal behaviors in these patients.MethodsA total of 680 cases with suicidal tendency were collected from inpatients in a tertiary general hospital in Guangzhou(October 2012-October 2017).The sample was divided into two groups based on the occurrence of suicidal tendency(suicidal ideation and attempted suicide).Data were collected on their gender, age, admission department, suicide inducement, suicide pattern, mental illness, physical illness and other data, and the t-test and χ2 test were used to compare the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the two groups.Binary logistic regression analysis was used to explore the risk factors of suicide behavior.ResultThe sample with suicidal tendency were mainly female(66.6%),married(77.4%),psychiatric inpatients(74.4%),and suffering from depression(66.2%).There was a significant difference between male and female suicidal methods in patients who had committed suicidal behavior(P=0.014).There were more men jumping from the building, and more women using drugs and wrist-cutting.Binary logistic regression analysis was used to find the risk factors of suicidal behavior which suggest in terms of the department of admission, compared with the psychiatric department,Intensive Care Unit(OR=7.844,P=0.001)was a risk factor for suicidal behavior.Among the etiological factors for suicide, people with broken marriages(OR=3.646,P=0.021)are more likely to commit suicide.Malignancy(OR=4.620,P=0.006)was a risk factor in people with physical illness.Bipolar disorder(OR=3.734,P=0.028)was a risk factor for suicidal behavior compared with people without mental illnessConclusionPatients with bipolar disorder, patients in intensive care units, cancer patients, and patients with broken marriage might be risk factors for suicidal behavior. Moreover, the suicide methods of the two sexes are different, which needs great clinical attention for targeted preventive measures to be taken.
