Purpose: Lumbar disc herniation(LDH)is a common reason of low back pain.As one special type of LDH,nucleus pulposus sequestration can cause more severe and painful clinical symptoms. We found that nucleus pulposus sequestration were always accompanied with abnormal serum uric acid(UA).This study was to analyse the relationship between serum UA and nucleus pulposus sequestration in LDH patients. Methods: 514 patients with lumbar disc herniation were selected who had suffered inpatient surgery in Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University in nearly five years. We collected patients' basic information,UA value and determined whether the disc is sequestered from MRI and during surgery. The correlation between disc herniation and UA was analyzed in Spearman correlation.Variables were analyzed in univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: Nucleus pulposus sequestration was positively correlated with the level of UA(r=0.357,P<0.001).UA values were divided into three levels according to tertiles. After adjusting other variables, the first UA level(OR?=?1.978,95%CI: 1.065–3.674,P=0.031)and the third UA level(OR?=?4.348,95%CI: 2.446–7.731,P<0.001)were significantly associated with nucleus pulposus sequestration compared with the second UA level. Conclusion: Lumbar disc herniation was significantly correlated with UA.Both lower and higher UA were risk factors for nucleus pulposus sequestration in LDH patients.
