ObjectiveTo analyze the characteristics and application prospects of harmonic scalpel in superficial parotidectomy.MethodsWe performed retrospective study using data from the patients who underwent superficial parotidectomy between June 2016 and June 2017.All operation are consistent and completed by experienced doctors, the whole of the patients were divided into the harmonic scalpel group and the monopolar diathermy group.Across the two groups of the patients, comparison between different operation equipment, collecting and comparatively analyzing records of patients with gender, age, pathology diagnosis, tumor diameter, operative time, blood loss, postoperative flow, postoperative drainage time, postoperative hospital stay, postoperative facial nerve paralysis, postoperative hematoma and salivary fistula.ResultsTotal superficial parotidectomy was performed on 24 patients with the harmonic scalpel and 25 with monopolar diathermy.Use of the harmonic scalpel was associated with a significant reduction in postoperative drainage time [(3.13±0.90)vs.(3.72±0.79);t=2.460,P=0.018],postoperative drainage time [(5.0±1.10)vs.(5.60±0.76);t=2.221,P=0.031] and degree of postoperative temporary facial paralysis(Z=-2.138,P=0.033)versus monopolar diathermy(P<0.05).There was no statistical difference in blood loss, operative time, postoperative flow, postoperative hematoma and salivary fistula(P>0.05).ConclusionUsing harmonic scalpel in superficial parotidectomy has obvious advantages for protection of tissue in surgical area and facial nerve over monopolar diathermy. And it's safe and reliable which is worthy of popularization and application.
