With an interest in Only You, a job-hunting TV program, this thesis presents astudy of identity construction of the host who worked for the TV program by takingthe paradigm of critical discourse analysis and applying sociocognitive approach putforward by van Dijk.Firstly, this study makes the research focus on the identity construction byanalyzing the data transcribed from the conversation between the host and job-huntersin the TV show. Profound exploration in this study makes it clear that the identity ofthe host is constructed in this TV show from two levels: generally a friend to ajob-hunter and conditionally an advisor to a job-hunter.Secondly, this study applies sociocognitive approach put forward by van Dijk todiscover the mechanism of identity construction of the host from macro and microlevels. And by analyzing the conversation data in context and discourse from macroand micro levels, the author of this thesis finds that the construction mechanism iscontrolled by the host's context model which manipulates language use to constructthe identity of the host.Thirdly, the analysis also exposes that the host makes great effect on the jobinterview with his language use and identity construction. It shows that the host'slanguage use will more or less attract the attention of the Bosses to a particularadvantage or disadvantage of a job-hunter which finally influences the judgment ofthe Bosses to a job-hunter.
