Philip Roth(1933-)has been perhaps the most critically significant and influential and consistently controversial writer in American literature,because of his excellent novels,he has been nominated for the Nobel Prize for literature many times.Roth tries to present readers an alienated character in his works,especially the Kepesh who is a protagonist in Kepesh Trilogy(including The Breast,The Professor of Desire and The Dying Animal).The kepesh Trilogy,a typical postmodern novel in America,mainly shows readers the protagonist's pursuit of desire throughout his life,and meanwhile,it reflects the protagonist's ethical dilemma and reflection through his struggles between the morality and instinct,sense and sensibility.This thesis interprets the trilogy in the light of the ethical literary criticism.The introduction of the writer and the Kepesh Trilogy,the research background and significance of the thesis,a detailed summary of the literature review,and the ethical literary criticism are firstly introduced.Then,the author analyzes the alienation and crisis of identity conveyed by desire narration with details,and clarifies the ethical deformation,represented by metamorphosis in a female breast,and ethical reflection as a result of the protagonist's sex pursuit,meanwhile,the background of postmodern culture of sex revolution and consumption culture is also illustrated.Lastly,the whole contents of the research and suggestions for modern people are referred in the last chapter.
