In recent years,the western literary works in the image of the East has attracted more and more attention,on the one hand is the deconstruction and reflection from the postcolonial perspective,on the other hand,the Oriental Image in western literature can also reflect the specific historical conditions of social and cultural psychology.Maugham was a famous English writer in the nineteenth Century,and his literary works involved many eastern images.In this paper,through the analysis of the image of the East in his representative literary works in different periods,the paper presents the evolution of Maugham’s Oriental Outlook,and analyzes the underlying causes of the change of the Oriental view.In the introduction,the author studies the current situation of the eastern image in Maugham’s works at home and abroad.In the first part,the author introduces the theory of "the other".The second part is the main part of the thesis,in this part,the research takes time as the axis,according to "The shackles of life","In Chinese screen","The painted veil" of the three works published successively,the oriental images in the works of Maugham are analyzed.The song of "the shackles of life" is the eastern image created by Maugham according to the prevailing consciousness of the west.On the basis of Maugham’s travels in China,with the help of the social,cultural and natural landscape in China,he has a more objective understanding of the image of china.Finally,through the “The painted veil”,Maugham finally expressed his recognition of China and the East,and found his own soul in the collision of Chinese and Western culture.In the third part of the thesis,the author sums up Maugham’s view of the east from the simple image of the literature to the pursuit of spiritual belonging,and then analyzes the complex causes of the evolution of the Oriental view of Maugham.Through the research and analysis of the evolution of Maugham’s view of the East,we can better examine the western society’s understanding of the East,and show the cultural psychology of the eastern image. |
