A Comparative Study On English And French Translations Of Chinese Political Neologisms From The Perspective Of Eco-translatology

Vocabulary is arguably the most dynamic component of a language.In recent years,the changing landscape of international development,China's expanding global influence and the popularity of new media contributed to the emergence and spread of political neologisms.In order to draw a clearer picture of the "real China"to foreigners,in particular its major political principles and political stance,it is vital to establish a new external discourse system and a standardized translation of political neologisms.The translation of political neologisms has become a research focus for Chinese and foreign scholars alike.English translations of political neologisms has been analyzed from the perspectives of the Equivalence Theory and the Theory of Linguistic Adaptation.This thesis adds on to the list by providing an analysis of political neologisms through the perspective of Eco-translatology Theory.The theory proposes the notion of "translation as adaptation and selection" and adopts translation strategies such as "three-dimensional transformations" and "post-event penalty".The corpus used throughout this paper consists of neologisms in Chinese selected from the Reports on the Work of the Government(from 2013 to 2017),as well as their English and French translations.These new political terminologies are organized into three categories:brand new terms,existing terms with a new meaning and borrowed terms.After making a thorough analysis of the translations via the perspective of the "three-dimensional transformations" approach,the author comes to a conclusion:"linguistic transformation" is the strategy used most often when translating brand new terms;a question of whether to preserve cultural images or not comes to light when translating existing terms with new meanings;and"communicative transformation" is the strategy most used when translating borrowed terms.The three dimensions are interdependent.Translators should,therefore,adapt to the unique translational eco-environment and take all factors into consideration to reach the highest degree of holistic adaptation and selection.
