A Study Of Strategies For The Chinese-English Translation Of Culture-Loaded Words In The Audio-Visual Subtitles From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

Nowadays,the cultural exchange between China and other countries in the world has become more and more frequent and one of the important manifestations is that more and more Chinese films and TV programs have been introduced to the world.Films and TV programs which are rich in Chinese characteristics usually contain a lot of Chinese cultures,which are embodied mostly by culture-loaded words.Therefore,the translation of culture-loaded words in the audio-visual subtitles has a direct influence on the target audience in terms of their understanding of Chinese culture.Thus,the author of this thesis makes a study of the strategies for the Chinese-English translation of culture-loaded words in the subtitle of Empresses in the Palace at the levels of word adaptation,linguistic style adaptation and culture adaptation,finds out the advantages and disadvantages of the translation and summarizes some specific translation strategies and methods so as to provide some references for the further improvement of translating culture-loaded words in the audio-visual subtitles,using the Adaptation Theory proposed by Jef Verschueren as its theoretical basis and taking the popular Chinese TV series Empresses in the Palace in recent years as its research subject.The research findings indicate that the strategies frequently used in the translation of culture-loaded words can be classified as follows:Literal Translation,Deletion Translation,and Free Translation plus Modeling Translation.Regarding the strategy for Literal Translation,it can be adopted when a similar image of culture-loaded words is found in the target language so as to meet the need of culture adaptation.As for the strategy for Deletion Translation,it can be used when culture-loaded words contain too much redundant information so that it can adapt to the target readers' reading habits and ensure the embodiment of the source language's cultural information.As to the strategy for Free Translation plus Modeling Translation,it can be flexibly used when there is a cultural vacancy relating to the culture-loaded words for the target audience so as to satisfy the need of adaptation of both source and target languages.
