Languages are tools used differently by individuals in diverse settings to accomplish different purposes. An interpreter is challenged not only by his fluency in languages, but also by his understanding of the speaker's aims, and by his accuracy in the delivery of the speaker's intent to the listeners. As pragmatics examines accuracy in comprehension and delivery of semantic meaning in a communication process,it is necessary to study interpreting from the perspective of pragmatics.Based on the author's English-Chinese consecutive interpreting practice, this paper focuses on pragmatic failures in interpreting. It looks into the background, preparation process and performance of the task.It then analyses pragmatic failures as it occurred in the interpreting task and then gives a revised version of each utterance. This paper takes Jenny Thomas' theory on pragmatic failures as the foundation on which the research takes off. After analyzing the examples, the paper looks into the causes of pragmatic failures and with regard to these factors, the paper proposes some corresponding solutions to tackle pragmatic failures and increase pragmatic competence under the guidance of Thomas' theory on pragmatic failures. The author hopes that this field report will help increase awareness of the importance of pragmatic competence in interpreting, serve as a reference material for more research into pragmatic failures in interpreting and would also be of help in future interpreting task.
