Nowadays,246 universities and colleges have set up the Master of Translation and Interpreting(MTI)programme and have so far produced a large number of MTI graduates. With the further development of the MTI programme, the enrollment of MTI postgraduates also continues to increase. However, the translation competence of the MTI candidates cannot satisfy the requirements of the translation market, for huge gaps exist between students' real performance and market requirements on them.Since the present researches and studies on translation competence have not reached a consensus, the author of this report classified translation competence into linguistic competence and extra-linguistic competence and designed a questionnaire, with the hope of providing suggestions to the training of MTI candidates. The subjects of the survey are the MTI candidates nationwide. The survey starts with designing a questionnaire based on one basic question:the status quo of the translation competence development of the MTI candidates. The author of this report analyze the research data on the basis of the valid questionnaires collected.Through this survey, the author has the findings as follows:Through the learning of the MTI courses, the translation competence of the MTI candidates has been improved and most of them are satisfied with the MTI translation teaching at their institutions of higher learning. However, there are still defects in MTI curriculum design, translation practice and internship;some MTI candidates have not selected a direction for their MTI studies, lacking practical experience in translation and knowledge in professional fields. Therefore, the survey suggests that MTI universities and colleges should develop an MTI education model centered on the learners' translation competence,a curriculum that focuses on developing the actual translation competence, and an integrated training system combining on-campus learning and off-campus training so that competent professional translators are produced to meet the needs of the language service providers both nationally and internationally.
