An Analysis Of Identification In TED Speeches With Global Issue Tags

After entering the 21st century,the new technology pushes us into a new stage where information can be got by various channels,such as the Internet.Taking the advantage of its efficiency and convenience,the Internet becomes people's another good choice without any doubt.Being uploaded to the Internet in 2006,the videos of TED(Technology,Entertainment,and Design)speeches have been translated into many languages and watched by billions of Internet users until now.By dint of TED speeches' gigantic impact all over the world,they have become the objects in many studies and researches.Through the research and analysis in this thesis,the necessity and importance of using rhetorical strategies in the process of delivering speeches are seen by the author and are determined by the rhetorical situation of the TED speeches.For the sake of achieving identification,we mainly take the identification strategies via sympathy,antithesis and inaccuracy.Identification via sympathy can be achieved in the following ways:meeting the needs of the audiences,searching the common values,sharing the same emotional states and showing the excellency in ethics.When talking about some negative affairs or harmful things confronted by all the mankind,identification via antithesis is the main strategy that is adopted.The strategy of Identification via inaccuracy can be used to bridge the distance between speakers and audiences by using to the forms of first person plural such as "we".Experts and scholars have also carried on empirical analysis from different angles on various kinds of speeches in domestic and foreign.In this thesis,TED speeches with global issue tags are analyzed from the perspective of identification theory,with the purpose of enriching and expanding the theory's application scope.But beyond that,through the deep analysis on TED speeches with global issue tags,we have found that Identification Theory can be used as a research angle for the study of public speeches.The findings and implications of this thesis can be drawn as reference for public speaking and its practices.
