Pisan Cantos is the essence of Ezra Pound’s The Cantos,which contains eleven poems,and is also a concentrated presentation of Pound’s thoughts.The thesis studies the Confucian culture in Pisan Cantos from the perspective of cosmopolitanism that is embodied in three kinds of cosmopolitanism,including individualistic cosmopolitanism,patriotic cosmopolitanism and universal cosmopolitanism and analyzes the guiding significance of Confucianism to the development of individuals,nations and the world.The purpose of the thesis is to find out Pound’s cosmopolitan opinions expressed by using Confucian culture which contains approving cultural diversity and cultural differences and seeking cultural consensus and universal values in the process of the communication and integration between Confucian culture and western culture that reflects Pound’s strong sense of social responsibility,besides,he also uses Confucian ideas to explain his views on personal and national development,and tries to build a world of harmonious development.The thesis can be divided into six parts.The first chapter is a brief introduction of the social background of Pisan Cantos,the Confucianism in Pisan Cantos,the theory of cosmopolitanism,the purpose and significance of the study and at last the thesis statement.The second chapter is the research status of Pisan Cantos at home and abroad and the innovative points of the thesis.The third chapter explores Pound’s suggestions for individual development,because individuals are the starting point of cosmopolitanism;in Pisan Cantos,Pound learns from Confucian ideas about individual development which includes the advocacy of personal liberty,the obedience of ethical order and self-reflection,reflecting Pound’s consideration of individual growth.The fourth chapter researches Pound’s concern for American development,for the reason that patriotism is the foundation of cosmopolitanism;only loving one’s own country can one transcend national boundaries to care for others outside one’s borders.Pound learns from the policy of benevolence in Confucianism and thinks it is a good solution to American social problems and the reconstruction of American social order.The fifth chapter analyzes Pound’s interpretation of the Confucian harmonious world in Pisan Cantos;as a part of the world,individuals have the social responsibility to strangers and the universal value of cosmopolitanism demands the interests of individuals and nations to submit to the world’s value,moreover,politics,economics and culture in different races and countries should communicate more,achieving the peaceful and friendly development of the world.The last chapter is conclusion.It summarizes Pound’s references to Confucian culture in Pisan Cantos and gets a conclusion that according to the needs of the actual culture,Pound transforms the Confucian ideology and culture creatively and uses Confucianism to express his concern for the development of mankind and the world,demonstrating the cosmopolitan characteristic of the integration of Confucianism and Pound ideology.
