Being the highest technical organization of the IMO,the Maritime Safety Committee plays an important role in safeguarding maritime safety, and it is helpful for us to improve marine management capability and avoid maritime risks by learning its core information. The report is based on the translation of a range of issues in agenda items of the 98th Session of the Maritime Safety Committee Meeting, including the legal advice on early implementation of a treaty, measures to strengthen maritime security,goal-based standards safety level approach, the outputs related to mandatory instruments approved at MSC 97 and the latest progress for piracy and armed robbery.Based on Nida's functional equivalence theory, the author discusses the translation methods of English passive sentences in the maritime texts, namely, translating English passive sentences into Chinese passive sentences, translating English passive sentences into Chinese active sentences, and translating English passive sentences into sentences without subject in Chinese.Furthermore, the report summarizes how to translate the passive sentences in the maritime texts into Chinese completely and smoothly on the basis of faithfulness to the original text to make the translation idiomatic, and achieve functional equivalence in translation.
