| Both natural and man-made disasters are sudden,abnormal and destructive,and they have always received wide attention from human society.Since modern society is a graphical one,the news photography for it is a very intuitive way to record disaster occurred in all over the world,and it becomes the important approach for people to understand the disaster information.After 60 years of development and accumulation,The World Press Photo(hereinafter referred to as WPP)has become the most influential photography competition in the world.Each year’s winning entries represent the highest level of news photography in the world and become the benchmark for the photography industry.So the research on its works will help to provide advanced experience for journalists.More than 90 percent of the award winning entries in the WPP are disaster themes and the analysis not only provides advice to other news photographers,but also provides a glimpse into the performance of governments and people in disasters,which in turn reflects the media values advocated by WPP.This study analyzes the visual framework of disaster photography works from 1998 to 2017 by using the framework theory.It was found that in the aspect of expression subjects,the "suffering framework" of the victims and the disaster scene were mainly represented,and the prominent victims were mainly women and children and other vulnerable groups.In terms of expression,the use of low-profile pictures and positive close-ups reveal the suffering details of the disaster news,which directly reflect the tragic experience of people.Based on the analysis of the visual framework of the award-winning works of breaking news disaster,this article continues to delve into how photographers harness this framework,the deep structure of the visual framework,and try to generalize the media values advocated by WPP.The author found that the award-winning photographer usually framed from the scene of the news in a concise narrative structure,and what the author captures is the decisive moment of scene,in addition,most of the works contain the strong humanistic spirit and the thought-provokingpower of thought,which mostly convey the deep meaning behind the image to the readers.Moreover,the visual frame of the winning works and the way photographer using can reflect the media values advocated by WPP.That’s the real view of the scene,the view of humanity,the view of the report of "exposing the ugly".In the last part of the thesis,the author gives some helpful suggestions to news photographers from the perspective of expressing objects,expressions and values combining with the development trend of news photography reflected in the winning works. |
