Critical Discourse Analysis(CDA)originates from Critical Linguistics(CL),regards language as a social practice and is aimed at discovering the relations of language, power and ideology.News discourse aims to reflect the facts fairly and convey accurate information. In fact,it is the linguistic representation of different values and ideologies.News discourse,as the main way of public information dissemination, has become one of the main research objects in the critical discourse analysis. This thesis takes the news discourse on THAAD Deployment as text samples, which are respectively selected from Chinese and American mainstream media. The theoretical framework of this thesis is composed of Norman Fariclough's Three-Dimensional Model and the Systemic Functional Grammar(SFG)by M.A.K.Halliday.The Chinese news reports are chosen from chinadaily.com and xinhua.net while the American counterparts are selected from nytimes.com and time.com.The research is conducted through the following three dimensions, the description of the text, the interpretation of discursive practice and the explanation of social and political determinants. The corpus tool Antconc 3.5 and Webcorpus are also introduced to ensure the objectivity of the quantitative and qualitative researchThe study aims to answer the following three research questions:1.What are the linguistic disparities, including lexical classification and modality,in the news discourse on THAAD Deployment from China and the United States?2.How does the discursive strategy exert influences on readers' recognition of the event in the interpretation stage in terms of reporting verbs and news sources?3.Are the ideologies embedded in the reports different and what are the social and political determinants behind them?Through the comparative analysis of the news discourse from the mainstream media of the two countries, the study finds that distinct differences of ideologies are embodied in different news sources. In the dimension of text description, lexical frequency and the collocation of the keyword differ from each other;the modal auxiliary verbs,in the modality system, are different in the values, proportion and distribution. The ultimate goal of language features is to serve the values and ideologies embedded in the news discourse. On the basis of the domestic and oversea English reports on THAAD deployment,it can be concluded that Chinese news reports focus on conveying and emphasizing the attitude and position of Chinese government;American news reporters, through the lexical collocation and the expansion of news sources, work on embedding the mainstream values and ideologies of the United States in the news discourse. The research value and significance lies in two aspects:First, the thesis analyzes the linguistic features of vocabulary selection and modality system in order to provide reference for pertinent expressions of Chinese discourse and values when Chinese mainstream media hit the problem of conveying Chinese stance and position in the future.Second, for the reading of the English news discourse,it is necessary to remind readers to unveil the power and ideology hidden in the discursive strategies and cultivate an objective and critical thinking.
