Alice Munro,a many-time winner of Canada's Governor General's Award for Fiction,is a famous contemporary Canadian short-story writer whose works have also achieved increasing attention.As Alice Munro became the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in2013,her novels have been translated into many foreign languages,and today she is a world-renowned writer.Alice Munro gets significant achievements in the international literary world for her abundant themes implied in her works.Through her works,she displays her great concerns with the social problems today in plain narration,even baldness to readers.It also shows that Munro always has a humanistic concern.This thesis will employ the collection of short stories,Dear life,as the object of study,which was published in 2012.The paper is going to study every story in the collection and summarize the threads that which can help expose how Munro deals with various social problems and the multiple themes in her work.This thesis will take the textual analysis as the research approach and the paper consists of five chapters.The first chapter is an introduction to Alice Munro and Dear Life.The second chapter starts from the works of female,mainly with the pursuit of happiness,through the novels of “To Reach Japan","Eye","Leaving Maverley","Gravel" as an example,to explore,as a female writer,Munro's deep concern to women who live in the family unit as mother,daughter,wife.On the one hand,Monroe's novels show more and more modern women run away from the traditional role,displaying the courage to pursue independence,happiness,dare to challenge the authority,to break the shackles of traditional ideas,enhancing the self-consciousness.On the other hand,the author also begins to explore how to balance the relationship between "self" and "family".The novel shows the ups and downs of women on the road of self-exploration.In the third chapter,from the "war of death","disease of death","accidental death" and "life of death" four dimensions to study the deep concern and thinking of Monroe for "death" and the living state of people,revealing the theme of respecting and cherishing life in Monroe's works.The author reveals the universal humanistic feelings.The fourth chapter is divided into three parts.The first part reveals the embarrassing situation of people in real life and the ideal world and people's mental crisis,through the analysis of real living conditions,the inner depths of the ideal living conditions.In the second part,through the analysis and research of the inner locus of many characters in the novel,theauthor reveals the dilemma of people who have lost their faith in the fierce collision between reason and emotion.The third part reveals the spiritual crisis of people in the belief crisis.As the old faith has been lost,new faith has not been established,people began to look for someplace to put the restless heart.The study of this paper shows that Alice Monroe's works contain a high degree of humanism,which shows the author's attention to all kinds of social problems and the discussion of the human living environment.In this paper,"dear life" as the research object,analyses and summarizes Monroe's works in three themes: Women's self-exploration;the decline and extinction of life;people's spiritual crisis.Through the study of the theme of the work,it can help readers better understand the profound meaning of Munro's works,feel the unique artistic charm of her works and develop a more comprehensive understanding.
