A Report On The Translation Of The Defense Industrial Base (Chapter3&Chapter4)

With the rapid development of science and technology as well as the increasing demand for translation,softwares designed for machine translation(MT)and computer aided translation(CAT)have emerged one after another.However,those softwares also have great limitations.Errors are inevitable in machine translation.To guarantee the quality of translation,we have to adopt post-editing methods which can realize the balance between translation speed and translation quality thus giving full play to the advantages of man-machine interaction.This paper takes The Defense Industrial Base as the foundation of translation practice report,which mainly introduces how a large translation project was completed by division of labor,analyzes features of defense-related pragmatic text and error types of MT,describes difficulties in the handling of lexical errors,syntactic errors as well as textual errors,and explores some post-editing methods for this kind of text.Defense-related pragmatic text is characterized by strong specialty,abundant terminologies,complicated part of speech,numerous long and complex sentences,and language style which is rigorous,objective,and fact-oriented.Therefore,the author mainly uses methods like searching of proper nouns,conversion of parts of speech at the lexical level;uses methods like rearrangement of word order,segmentation of long and complex sentences,selection of the subject,and changing of passive voice at the syntactic level;and uses methods like improvement of coherence and cohesion and adjustment of original language style at the textual level.This report aims to offer some referential value to those teams which combine MT with manual post-editing as well as translators specializing in defense-related pragmatic text for improving the speed and quality of their translation,better meeting the needs of social development and strengthening the author's ability in translation practice.
