Reading and writing are two of the most important contents of English teaching all the time,especially in the new reformation of college entrance examination,the bureau of education added a new question type which is summary writing,this is also the new tendency of English writing in the future.Summary writing is a mixed task which is the combination of reading and writing,so it puts forward a high requirement to students' reading comprehension ability,inductive ability and expression capability in writing.At the same time,the total points of reading comprehension is the highest in an collage entrance examination paper,it is so important for students to go through it better and faster.This thesis is aimed to introduce the summary writing approach into senior high school's English writing class in order to improve students' ability of reading comprehension.At the same time,the author also hopes that this approach can supply an easier way to other researchers and teachers in improving students' reading comprehension ability.The thesis takes the relevance theory,the transfer theory and the noticing hypothesis as theoretical basis for the sake of verifying whether the summary writing approach can improve students' reading comprehension ability and the correlation between the score of summary writing and reading comprehension.To achieve the goal of the study,two classes with totally 120 students in Grade 1 from Qin'an No.2 Middle School participated in the experiment.One was the experimental class(EC)and the other was the controlled class(CC).Before starting the formal experiment,a pretest was taken for two classes to ensure students' reading comprehension ability in EC and CC had no obvious disparity.And then,students in EC wrote one summary in a week,and students in CC practiced with the traditional teaching method.The teaching experiment lasted two months.When the experiment was over,a post-test was taken for two classes again to see if there were noticeable differences emerging between EC and CC in reading comprehension.The results of the study show that summary writing approach is more efficient for students to improve their reading comprehension ability than traditional teaching method,because it can help students to build their confidence in reading and writing,cultivate students to form good reading habits and methods,and enhance students' reading fluency.Teachers can guide students to write summaries,combine reading and writing together in order to improve students' readingcomprehension ability,and finally get to the aim of writing to read.So,it is an efficient and useful teaching method for English teachers to improve students' reading comprehension ability by summary writing approach.
