This thesis tries to study how to translate compound sentences in the novel Playing for Pizza in a perfect way under the guidance of domestication and foreignization.Playing for Pizza is an American novel by John Grisham in which John tells us about Rick's many humorous experience in Italy. The language in the novel is easy to read and understand, but author tells us the story with lots of compound sentences including attributive sentences, adverbial sentences and even coordinate sentences with an attributive sentence inside it,making it difficult to translate, and those compound sentences are always hard to deal with. Therefore, the translator wants to study how to translate those compound sentences according to domestication and foreignization. As an important and prevailing translation principle, domestication and foreignization has always been adopted to translate literature work.Given the variety and complexity of compound sentences, the translation strategy could help translators deal with problems with high proficiency.According to the strategy, domestication focuses on the target language, requiring translators to fully consider the role of target readers based on the individual development of human language. While translating compound sentences,it could inspire translator to maintain the language style of target language.Foreignization then looks at the original text to spread distinguished culture,so translators also are required to achieve the fluency of the meaning in the view of it.In the translation process, the translator has adapted addition of expressions, division of sentences, reverse translation and other methods to finish the task and solve the problems occurred.
