The Persuit And Exploration Of Zhu Ziqing’s Image

Zhu Ziqing is a special existence in Chinese modern literature history.He is an important essayist,scholar,poet and democrat.He has the images of’preferring to starve to death than eat the ’relief food’ from America" "Martyr",and "the one who wrote Beiying".Most of these images are interpretation and extension of Zhu Ziqing’s narration from a certain standpoint,and cannot show the overall picture of Zhu Ziqing,and especially cannot explain his painful mind transition.Those images conceal the uniqueness of Zhu Ziqing as a representative of the Chinese intellectuals.This article focuses on the real Zhu Ziqing,who has long been covered by the classical description,so that to come close to the writer,and make objective assessments of his life choices and literary creations.In order to clarify the problem,this article will be divided into three chapters:The first chapter discusses the formation and evolution of Zhu Ziqing’s main images.After Zhu Ziqing’s death in 1948,a wide range of commemorative activities were launched in various sectors of society.From the narrations of his friends and relatives we can restore a more specific image of Zhu Ziqing,including those achievements of him as an essayist and poet,etc.The commemorative article highlighted Zhu Ziqing’s "most complete personality" and treated him as a model of intellectuals.Zhu Ziqing,who had died young,died of poverty.The commemoration of his death came with the criticize to the current social situation.With the intervention of political discourse,the depiction of his later years’ transition gradually got the significance of the intellectuals’ transformation.The commemoration of Zhu Ziqing has also become a declaration of the intellectuals that they have consciously accepted the transformation and willing to change their mind for the new era.In 1949,Mao Zedong’s opinion about Zhu Ziqing’s "preferring to starve to death than eat the’relief food’ from America" became the most widely spread writer image,allowing Zhu Ziqing to enter the new evaluation system as a "martyr".Even though the narration about the writer based on his class,it still made a great influence on the spreading of his works and built up his reputation.The second chapter is to get acquainted with the real Zhu Ziqing and reveal its richness through reading his works and exploring his life history.When the pioneers of the May Forth Movement saw the family as a burden,they tried everything to storm out of the old family.However,Zhu Ziqing take the responsibility of family without hesitation.Under the influence of many factors such as heavy pressure of life,war,and passive personality,Zhu Ziqing struggled to analyse the current society and harshly questioned himself for a solution.Therefore,he established the theory of"Instantism" as a relief from daily life,which is also an impetus for him to be active and became a fighter later in his life.In comparison with young people,he positioned his social role as a middle-aged person who played the role of "adjuster".The limitations of the intellectual must be eliminated by self-improvement,self-destruction,and sacrifice for the new era.The third chapter focuses on the significance of approaching the true Zhu Ziqing and breaking his stylized image.First of all,it can help us to get a further understanding of Zhu Ziqing’s life choices,especially give an explanation of his retreat in the 1920’s.In fact,all of his choices are the result of long-term thinking and painful struggle.Zhu Ziqing never surrender to any popular social trend with out self-pondering.He remained calm in the era of utilitarianism and radicalism,holding the doctrine of the mean value.Secondly,although Zhu Ziqing’s numerous articles are widely circulated,the controversy surrounding his works has never ceased.Only by understanding his thoughts,can we approach the inner of the writer and explain his uniqueness,so as to more objectively evaluate the value of Zhu Ziqing’s works.Finally,restoring Zhu Ziqing’s various roles can open up new ideas for research.As one of the most widely spread writers in the modern literature,the reading of Zhu Ziqing remained at the level of his intrinsic image,leading to the limitations of interpretation.In the new era,in order to make a more objective evaluation of Zhu Ziqing,it is necessary to break the stylized image,and get approach to the real Zhu Ziqing in order to understand its uniqueness.This requires researchers to rack through all the relative materials,and strive to restore the writer’s true ideological changing process.At the same time,the researchers should return to the historical context.Zhu Ziqing has been the symbol of "the beauty of the word" in modern literature.However,only by digging through the thinking and struggle behind his long transition,and exploring the true colors of the writer can we get a better understanding of his life and work.
