A Rpport On The English Translation Of Selected Works Of Hu Jintao(Excerpts)

In June 2017,the Central Compilation and Translation Bureau launched the project of translating Selected Works of Hu Jintao into English.The author had the honor to participate in this project in December and undertook the translation of four articles excerpted from the book under the guidance of Liu Liang,deputy director of the English Department of the Bureau.And this report is based on the translation practice.With the rising of China's prestige,the target audience of the foreign-oriented publicity has changed.It is no longer limited to foreign specialists and scholars who are familiar with Chinese politics and culture,but extended to common people in foreign countries.In such a case,the purpose of translating the book has evolved into helping common people in foreign countries acquire a better understanding of this former Chinese leader and his thoughts on governing China.And such a change affects the purpose and the strategy of the translation.Therefore,Skopos theory is followed in the course of translation.In this report,firstly,the translation project and the translation process are introduced.Secondly,features of the source texts are discussed at the lexical and the syntactical level respectively.Thirdly,cases from this translation practice,along with those from similar texts,are analyzed under the guidance of Skopos theory.Finally,the conclusion of the translation report is drawn:Skopos theory is applicable to the translation of the source texts and similar texts as well.
