Directed forgetting refers to the forgetting of the specified material, and the forgetting of the material required to be forgotten under the participation of consciousness. It is a new paradigm for memory research. In this study,a clue variable is introduced on the basis of the classical experimental paradigm item-method of directed forgetting. The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of different hint clues on directional forgetting on different frequency words. The study used college students as the subjects. It consists of two parts: in the first study,we used the mixed experimental design of 2(group: hint clue group,no clue group)×2(word frequency type: high frequency, low frequency)× 2(indicator: TBR,TBF).We explored the difference of directed forgetting effect between different frequency words with and without clue hits, and found that partial cue effect exists in directed forgetting. In the second study,we used the mixed experimental design of2(group: group of TBR clue, group of TBF clue)×2(word frequency type: high frequency, low frequency)× 2(indicator: TBR,TBF).We further explored the effects of different cues(remembering cue, forgetting clue)on directed forgetting effects produced by different frequency words.Through the experimental study, the following conclusions are drawn.First, under item-methed of directed forgetting classic experimental paradigm, high frequency words and low frequency words all have obvious directed forgetting effect. The directional forgetting effect of low frequency words is significantly greater than that of high frequency words.Second, the presentation of some clues as a hint has a significant impact on the memory performance of the subjects.Recollection scores with clues were significantly lower than those without cues, that is,there was a partial clue effect.Third, under item-methed of directed forgetting classic experimental paradigm, when presenting cues of TBF items, the directional forgetting effect of high frequency words is enhanced. But it has no significant effect on the directional forgetting effect of low frequency words.Fourth, whatever types of hints are presented, low frequency words caused a larger average amplitude than high frequency words.Fifth, whatever word frequency type,TBR-R items cause more positive waves than TBF-F items between 400-600 ms.Sixth, the experimental results support the theory of selective coding and inhibition theory for the interpretation of directed forgetting effect in item-methed.
