English writing is an essential demonstration of high school students'comprehensive ability of English.But in recent years,senior high school students'writing ability is getting poorer,and the students don't like writing because they have nothing to write,and consequently it reduces their writing motivation.Lexical-Chunk Theory is based on the "lexical approach" of Michael Lewis,who believes that language is grammaticalization and not lexicalization.Lexical chunks are the unity of grammatical rules,semantic and pragmatic contexts,and are also the ready-made memory combinations in language.Once students get and store lexical chunks in their brain,they are easily retrieved and accessed to.The current research is proposing the application to English writing teaching the Lexical-Chunk Theory,with the aim to address the following two research questions:1.Can the application of Lexical-Chunk Theory to senior high school English writing teaching enhance the students' writing motivation?2.Can the application of Lexical-Chunk Theory to senior high school English writing teaching improve the students' writing ability?The experimental participants came from two parallel classes(120 students in total)in Grade12 of No.2 Yi Liang middle school in Kunming,Yunnan Province.The experiment lasts for about 4 months.In the experiment,the two classes are taught by the same teacher and used the same teaching materials.But the two classes adopted different teaching methods.To be more specific,the traditional English writing method was used in the CC(58 students);while the Lexical-Chunk Theory is applied to the EC(62 students).The data analysis of the pre-test and the post-test of the two classes and the interview showed results that the application of lexical-chunk theory is helpful in improving the English writing motivation and ability of the senior high school students.This study thus proved that to apply lexical chunks to the teaching of high school English writing can improve the teaching of high school English writing.
