Abstract/Summary:
As a masterpiece of China, numerous studies on The Story of the Stone and its translation versions have been carried out from various aspects, but studies on the translation of characters’language from the perspective of interpersonal grammatical metaphor are relatively rare.Given that, this thesis applies the theory of interpersonal grammatical metaphor to analyze characters’language in the two English versions translated by Yang Xian-yi and his wife Gladys Yang and David Hawkes.Mainly based on the theory of interpersonal grammatical metaphor and choosing Wang Xifeng’s typical language as research objects which includes the language that could reflect Wang Xifeng’s characteristics, the language that could reflect Wang Xifeng’s social status, and the language Wang Xifeng chooses in different occasions, this thesis adopts the method of comparative analysis and example analysis to compare and analyze two English versions of Wang Xifeng’s typical language from the perspective of metaphors of mood and metaphors of modality, through which this thesis aims to explore translators5 choice of the congruent form and the metaphorical form and the reasons for such choice and to conclude translators’ translation strategies, translation methods and translation effect. It is identified that the theory of interpersonal grammatical metaphor is applicable to the translation of characters’ language and it could provide a new perspective for the study of the translation of characters’ language.Through analysis, this thesis concludes that the Yangs and Hawkes adopted different strategies in translating Characters’ Language. The Yangs focused more on the reflection of characters’ social hierarchy and the faith to the target work while Hawkes on the reflection of the characters’ characteristics and the reception of the English readers.Besides,in the process of translating, appropriately using metaphors of mood could amend language’s mood to reveal the underlying implications in characters’ language, which could make the translation easily understood by English readers.Besides, appropriately using metaphors of modality to transfer implicit subjectivity into explicit subjectivity realized by some clauses like "I think"."I believe"could highlight speakers’ own subjective perspectives. In addition,it could hide speakers’attitudes and make the language more objective to transfer implicit objectivity into explicit objectivity realized by some clauses like "It’s certain","It’s probable".All in all,it is identified that the theory of interpersonal grammatical metaphor is applicable to the translation of characters’ language.
