This translation task is trusted by a translating company, and completed by the author alone.Roy Sorensen, the author of the translation material “Nothingness” selected in this translation project,is a professor of philosophy at the University of Washington. He has made achievements in language philosophy, epistemology and metaphysics, and has published A Brief History of the Paradox(2003)and Seeing Dark Things(2008)and so on.“Nothingness” is also published in the Stanford Encyclopedia Philosophy, and its full text is about 14,000 words, there having been no Chinese version yet.The paper starts with a certain global structure and starts to enter into nothingness, and then explores the regional implications of nothingness: raising twelve questions and discussing them one by one, involving the philosophers' theories, such as Heidegger,Aristotle, and Leibniz. This paper aims to apply Eugene A.Nida's functional equivalence theory to the specific translation practice of “Nothingness”,and based on the features of philosophical language summarized by the writer, addresses the difficulties encountered in translation practice: terminology problem, the processing of long sentences, and the processing of discourse logic, and analyzes specific examples from the functional equivalence of lexical level, syntactic level and textual level, and then puts forward the corresponding translating strategies and then proposes specific methods like supplementary translation, subtraction, word order adjustment. Therefore, the author concludes that functional equivalence theory is suitable for guiding the Chinese translation practice of English philosophical texts, and can provide support for the future philosophical translation practice. From this translation practice, the author has recognized what lacked in herself, and hopes to continuously improve herself and make up for the shortages in the future.
