The Study Of Other Group Images In Coetzee's Novel From The Perspective Of Levinas's Other Theory

Since the beginning of his creation,Coetzee has brought the other into the field of observation,and almost every novel is related to the other.Coetzee's other group images include the other of colored who are marginalized in the context of the center of Europe and the other of animals who have been killed in human society.These others sometimes appeared on the land of South Africa,sometimes in South Africa,where apartheid prevails,and sometimes deep inland in the South Africa.Coetzee,who thinks deeply about the ethical relationship between the subject and the other,does not stop at reproducing the situation of the other,but probes into the ethical relationship between the subject and the other,and tries to find out the way to solve the conflict between them.From the perspective of Levinas's ethics of the other,this paper explores the image of the other in Coetzee's works,and tries to analyze Coetzee's view of the other.The thesis have two parts,Introduction and Text.The introduction comprehensively expounds Coetzee's life experience and creation career,and analyzes the main contents of Coetzee's works.This part teases the current situation of Coetzee's research on the other,and elaborates the basic ideas of this study.Text are mainly starts from the following five parts.Chapter 1 mainly introduces the basic connotation of Levinas' ethics of the other,and emphatically explains the definition of the other,the connotation of the absolute other,the internal requirements of the ethical subject responsible for the other;and introduce the process of the formation and development of Coetzee's view of the other.At the same time,it reveals the inherent consistency between Levinas' ethics of the other and Coetzee's view of the other.Chapter 2 expounds the situation and resistance of the others who are colored under the imperial hegemony.Other people of color become"barbarians" and lose their right of life,speech and freedom.In the brutal colonial society and the post-colonial society,the other people of color did not give up the pursuit of rights.They fought back against the oppression of the subject in the way of silence,violent counterattack and reconstruction of their own image.Chapter 3 analyse the situation of other animals in human society and the animal ethics of Coetzee.Coetzee believes that there is an abnormal ethical relationship between human beings and animals,which is embodied in the industrialization of animal farming and the eating of meat by human beings.Coetzee advocates animalism and vegetarianism,and opposes eating animals under the banner of rationalism and specialism.Chapter 4 shows that the ethical relationship behind the tragic fate of the other is expounded as a whole.From the angle of human nature,Coetzee takes care of the other and the subject,and proposed that the subject should bear the responsibility,and the other should also put down the hatred.The rational other and the responsible subject are the members of Coetzee's ideal society.From the perspective of ethics,he regards the harmonious coexistence between the subject and the other as the core of the ethical relationship.
