The most common feature of philosophical texts lies in its complexity and abstraction of the language.While the use of rhetorical figures in such texts reveals the author's inspiration and wisdom.Therefore,when translating philosophical text,understanding the meaning conveyed by the author has become a daunting task for the translator.Based on Eugene A· Nida's functional equivalence theory,the author takes the excerpts of Trying Not to Try written by Edward Slingerland as the source text,and there are no copyright translation till now.The functional equivalence theory emphasizes the communication of the meaning and the equivalence of functions.It emphasizes readers' important position in translation.In short,it emphasizes that the psychological response obtained by the original reader reading the original text is similar to the psychological response of the target readers' reading response.Under the guidance of this theory,the author summarized several specific translation strategies: literal translation,free translation(annotation,addition).The main point of the report is to translate figures of speech by adopting Functional equivalence theory.Firstly,the report briefly describes the translation task,including the background of the task,the introduction to the source text.Secondly,it describes the process of translation,including the preparation for translation,the translation process and the revision of translation.What's more,case analysis is the most significant part,which covers the introduction to Functional equivalence theory,features of the source text,as well as translation methods to deal with figures of speech,including literal translation,annotation and addition.In addition,the author points out the knowledge and experiences gained from this translation task.Finally,the last part points out the limitations,gives suggestions for the translator during the translation process and draws conclusions of the translation task.The thesis is aimed to arouse attentions and offer referential value to the translation of philosophical words.
