Reading is an important means of language acquisition and occupies an extremely important position in foreign language learning.For a long time,the study of reading motivation and reading strategy has been an important topic in foreign language teaching research,and the results are fruitful.However,there are still some gaps in the research objects.In the past,the research on college students' reading mainly focused on the high-level college students,and there was not enough attention to the newly established undergraduates in the past ten years.So what is the reading behavior of this large group of students? For this purpose,this study attempts to answer the following three questions: what is the motivation of English reading in non-English majors? What reading strategies do they use? Is there a correlation between reading motivation,reading strategy and reading level? In order to answer the above questions,this study takes a college in northern Fujian(2007 promoted)as an example,to investigate the non-English majors' reading motivation and reading strategies.The research objects of this paper are about two hundred students in the school.The research tools include reading motivational questionnaire,reading strategy questionnaire,interview and reading test.The study finds that the reading motivation of college students in the newly established college is at a moderate level,with the highest internal motivation,the lowest reading efficiency and the most important motivation interest.The use of reading strategies in the college is at a moderate level.Metacognitive strategy is the most commonly used strategy for college students.Evaluation strategy is frequently used,while understanding and memory is the least commonly used one.The high-level students tend to read news,while the medium and low-level ones enjoy reading magazines and talking articles.The biggest difficulty for everyone is vocabulary and grammar.For new words,students generally use the Internet or electronic dictionaries to find their meanings.In the assessment process,repetition is the most frequently used strategy for all students.Overall,the correlation between reading motivation and reading achievement has not reached a significant level.In the newly established university,students are weak with their English and have poor learning self-discipline.Despite their reading motives,they may not carry out effective reading activities,which affect the correlation between reading motivations and reading scores.However,in the 11 latitudes of reading motivation,self-efficacy,reading competition,reading recognition and reading level have weak positive correlation.Overall,reading strategies and reading scores are moderately correlated.In the four latitudes of reading strategies,the correlation between planning and reading achievement has reached a significant level.For the purpose of stimulating the students' English reading motivation,strengthening their use of reading strategies,and improving their reading skills,the author puts forward some suggestions for teaching.Firstly,teachers need to help students understand the importance of English reading,cater for their curiosity and encourage them to improve their reading;secondly improve students' self-efficacy and enhance their confidence in reading English;thirdly help students to apply reading strategies in their reading.
