Wen Tong is one of the most accomplished painters in the field of literati ink bamboo painting in the Northern Song Dynasty.The Huzhou Bamboo School he founded was the origin of the literati ink bamboo painting,which had a significant influence on the later development of Chinese paintings.The painting theory of “having had the images of the bamboo ready in one's mind” was expounded and carried forward by Su Shih in the article "Wen and the Pictures of the Bamboo in the Yun Dang Valley.” It influenced the creation of the Huzhou Bamboo School,which incorporates poetry and calligraphy into the literati ink bamboo painting and emphasized the importance of brush strokes techniques,which played a significant role in promoting the development of literati painting and were pioneers of Chinese literati painting.This article tries to use “having had the images of the bamboo ready in one's mind” as an index.Through screen analysis of Wen Tong's representative works “Mo Zhu Tu,” the author outlines his artistic concept,and summarizes his paintings techniques and sketching skills,pointing directly to the core values of Chinese painting — concerning about philosophical propositions.The ultimate problem to be expressed in traditional Chinese painting must evolve around the core issue of “meaning,” which is the essence of Chinese painting.Standing from the perspective of a contemporary painter,the author dives into the painting concept of"knowing the painted object beforehand," "form," and "harmony." Interprets the issues of"creation" and "mind” have great practical significance in further research into flower and bird sketches,thought-process of creative "artistic conception," observation method,and expression forms.
