A Report On The Translation Of Family Law Act(SBC2011,Part 1-Part 4)

This is a report on the translation of Family Law Act(SBC 2011,Part 1-Part 4),a Law of British Columbia,Canada.As a legal document,the translation material has such characters as precision of expression,formality in language,formulaic structure,and so on.Cross reference and lexical repetition of legal terminologies are considerably regarded as two most salient features of the source text,which are the main urgent problems to be solved in the course of legal terminologies' translation.Cultural differences make legal terminologies' translation more difficult.In respect to these problems,translation techniques: paraphrase and omission are proposed for legal terminologies' translation.Paraphrase is employed to solve the problems caused by cross reference and cultural differences;omission is employed to solve the problems caused by lexical repetition.Further,conditional sentences account for a large proportion and make trying problems for translation.In respect to these problems,translation methods: literal translation and free translation are employed for conditional sentences' translation.Conditional sentences are divided into explicit conditional sentences and implicit conditional sentences in this report.Generally speaking,literal translation is employed for explicit conditional sentences' translation,and free translation is employed for implicit conditional sentences' translation.However,they should be employed accordingly and flexibly during translation.It is hoped that these translation techniques and methods in this report can offer some reference to similar translation practice in the future.
